Sonny, PVC Flute in E for Blues Players

A fair bit of work and trial and error went into developing this striking
handcrafted PVC white and gold instrument! Here is a recent customer comment:

"I love this instrument as it produces a rich low bluesy tone. I can't fault
it in any way!"

The Sonny Blues Flute (a sort of penny whistle really) is a tribute to all the
Blues Musicians of the same name; there are quite a few including of course
Sonny Terry. The Sonny plays the basic blues scale, with some extra notes that
are very useful. The coolest feature of the Sonny is that the 7th note is at
the bottom, where you’ve wished it would be so often. Ever tried playing
‘Blowin in the Wind’ on a standard whistle? (The Sonny is also quite useful for
jazz.)

The standard Blues scale is usually 1, 3, 4, b5, 5, b7, which would need only
5 finger holes. So the Sonny has an extra hole to get the 2 (an F#) and also a
thumb hole to get the 6 (a C#). Therefore the scale playable on the Sonny is:

(D) E F# G A A# B C# D

With a few tricks, there are a few more ‘accidentals’ that are quite useable.

The 7 (D) is a long way below the E and is quite difficult to reach, so the
Sonny features a tone hole key like a clarinet or sax. And to add to the
coolness factor, the tuneable feature allows the head unit to be fitted either
way up - normal like a penny whistle, or upside down like a clarinet.

NB: The hole offsets can be configured for right or left handed players and
you can advise me which version you prefer at checkout.
